Project: “Quantification of Carbon Flow through a HumidTropical Forest in the Panama Canal Watershed”

SENACYT Code: Project COL07-011

Generalities

The Republic of Panama through the Law No. 86 November 30, 1998, approved the Kyoto Protocol demonstrating the compromise of the country, to contribute to the reduction of greenhouse effect.  Universidad Tecnológica de Panamá (UTP) through the Centro de Investigaciones Hidráulicas e Hidrotécnicas (CIHH) seeks to create in Panama technical capacity that let the carbon’s flow exchanged quantification in the tropical rainforest of Cerro Pelado in the Gamboa community.

Justification:

  • Climate Change
  • Lack of detailed studies of carbon fluxes in tropical rainforest.
  • Need to develop technical and scientific capacities in Panama for carbon flow quantification.

Duration

  • Two years into effect on
  • Three phases of 8 months.

Participating institutions

  • CIHH-UTP (Panama)
  • New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (USA).
  • Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha (Spain)

The budget for this project is funded by the Secretaría Nacional de Ciencia Tecnología e Investigación (SENACYT) through the Calls for Promotion of International Cooperation and Development 2007.
